What the County Clerk Does for You
Few of Tarrant County’s 1.8 million citizens go through life without calling on the
County Clerk for copies of birth certificates and marriage licenses, deeds to homes and other property as well as oil and gas lease records, death certificates, powers of attorney and a multitude of other personal and business documents.
In short, the County Clerk records life’s major events and transactions, issuing all marriage licenses and acting as local registrar for birth and death records. She and her 140 employees preserve and protect millions of documents vital to every citizen and business in 41 cities.
Beyond issuing and safeguarding personal records and commercial documents, she also serves as clerk for:
- County Criminal Courts
- County Courts at Law
- Probate Courts
These 15 courts rely on the County Clerk and her staff for administrative support, including the maintenance of records for criminal and civil cases as well as files for probated estates. In addition, the County Clerk’s office:
- Records almost half a million new land and business documents
every year.
- Oversees the collection of more than $24 million in fines and fees,
making it the county’s second largest generator of fees.
- Manages over $17 million in funds for minors, guardianships and
cash bonds.
Moreover, 27 cities have found that the County Clerk can handle their vital record-keeping operations more efficiently for less money. Fort Worth is the largest municipality in the county to entrust its vital records to the County Clerk’s office.
The office’s responsibilities keep growing in step with Tarrant County’s rapidly rising population and its flourishing business community.
Thanks to leading computer technology and imaging, these millions of documents are safely stored and easily retrieved, savings vast amounts of costly warehouse space and labor, and increasingly providing Web-based access to various public records.
